A guide to electrical design for new commercial builds

Commercial electrical design is a custom project to redesign current layouts or complete a new build that meets safety and practical requirements.

As Canberra electricians and contractors we complete a lot of projects from office buildings to hospitals, schools to apartment buildings. Every project is different and has various needs.

The commercial electrical design will all come down to what you are trying to achieve. A school has different requirements to a restaurant, for example. You may need a focus on lighting and connectivity in a school while a restaurant could have a focus on clean finishes and all construction being hidden. A bank would have a focus on security and CCTV while an office needs ready access to power supplies and practical solutions for kitchens and bathrooms. Pubs focus on TVs, gaming, and commercial lighting.

Depending on the size of your workplace, upgrading commercial lighting can save you thousands of dollars going forward by installing energy efficient and environmentally friendly LED fittings and globes.

When designing a new commercial build, our Canberra electricians take all of your requirements into consideration before coming back with a plan to implement the build. Like most things electrical, it’s always safety first.

Putting safety first

The protection of your staff, residents, clients, visitors and guests is critical to any commercial electrical design. Safety can focus on lighting levels, particularly in an office environment and areas prone to accidents or falls. A poorly lit hallway could lead to major legal dramas should someone be injured on your property. Backup systems should be in place to protect people in the event of a power outage. There are a number of safety requirements depending on the setting you are designing but generally that would include hardwired fire and smoke alarm systems, sprinklers, safety switches, surge protectors and ensuring any voltage supply is appropriate for the building. You might also like to consider an electrical inspection for your business.

Environmentally friendly design

As Canberra electricians and project managers we see many clients who are opting for a green focus on commercial electrical design from concept to completion. That may be as easy as planning in advance the types of appliances and lighting systems that will be used for environmentally friendly usage and incorporating kitchen and bathroom designs which focus on using minimal water and power. Natural lighting and green spaces can also add to helping reduce the impact on the environment.
